Unfortunately I only know one place in the Phoenix, AZ area that I would trust to even touch one of my cars. Fortunately I am a recently retired mechanic myself, and have the tools and access to a lift so I can check cars myself. I will only buy American brand cars. I spent 37 years working for a large municipal government (city) fleet services department. We had ONLY American vehicles, it was against the rules for the city to buy a non American brand vehicle. That is pretty much true of all government agencies. I know which models and years were reliable and which weren't. I know what the problems were, and how difficult and expensive they are to fix. And I know which vehicles are easiest to work on and get parts for. My car of choice by far has been the Ford Panther cars. I currently own two Mercury Grand Marquis. A 2006 that I bought 11 years ago, which had 87,000 miles on it when I bought it. I paid $7200 cash from a private seller. It now has 379,000 miles. I have spent less than $1000 on repair parts so far, but I am going to have to replace the power steering pump in the not too distant future. Last year I bought a like new 2007 Grand Marquis from a private seller, actually the original owner, with only 36,000 miles on it. I paid $10,000 cash. No taxes and no fees. It should have at least 400,000 miles left in it with proper maintenance and minimal repairs. These cars are super easy to work on, and parts are readily available, including engines and transmissions. Plus, instead of getting a little front wheel drive econobox, you are getting a large comfortable car with a V8 engine, rear wheel drive, a solid rear axle, and body on frame construction. The Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car look great. In fact they are downright elegant. And on the 2003 and newer models, the front end and steering parts are stronger than they are on some trucks. As for trucks, any 2004 and earlier model GM truck is going to be pretty reliable. Stay away from 2005 and later models with active fuel management unless you want to rebuild the engine to get rid of that. I would avoid any Ford truck 1997 or newer. Stay with the older style with Twin-I-Beam front suspension. 1997 and newer Ford truck. had significantly more problems than the older design. Especially avoid the 5.4L 3 valve Triton engine. For Dodge/Ram, I'd go all the way back to 1993. They made a lot of not so great changes in 1994, and things only got worse from there. The biggest problem with the V6 Charger (pre Stellantis, stay FAR away from those) is the Pentastar engine. They are a VERY bad design, and they have several failure points. And unlike the Ford Panther cars, you are not going to get a V8 Charger in this price range. I advise avoiding the 2005 and up Mustang V6. That engine is an absolute nightmare. It is a complete hodgepodge that Ford converted from an OHV to an OHC design. They are well known for timing component problems, and replacing those require removing the engine from the car, because it has timing components on both ends of the engine. I have a 2003 V6 Mustang, with the 3.8L OHV pushrod engine. These have one common issue. Head gasket failure. That is because Ford decided to use aluminum heads and a cast iron block. Iron and aluminum expand and contract at different rates, and different amounts when they are heated and cooled, and since the head gasket is between them, they eventually fail. The best way to prevent or at least postpone this problem is to WARM UP YOUR CAR before taking off. Anybody who knows anything about internal combustion engines knows that you should NEVER put a load on a cold engine. It causes the metal to heat up and expand way too quickly, which actually damages the molecular structure of the metal. Also, cold metal is weak and brittle.

That car is a gem. He's also got some good tapes to go with it. I would have jumped at this. You've even got some really good mods to it already. It's a shame that these had head gasket issues, and the AOD transmission that may make adding power a sketchy proposition. I had a mark VII LSC which I loved that had the AOD transmission kill it. Ever since I've been afraid to mess with that automatic transmission on rear wheel drive 80's to early 90's Fords. Especially if they are anything high performance. Keep it clean and keep customisation to a minimum and you can get a lot for it in a few years.

ALTIMA! I thought over the past couple years it was just me, but I am firmly convinced Altima drivers are the worst. Then anything else Nissan. Then anything with a GM 3800 in it, AKA the cockroaches of the road. Not sure if it's a trope or not, but I experience it, and hear about it too much to not be true.

😊 I have 2004 Le Sabre with 52k miles on it in good shape. The thing is it has an annoying clunk on light throttle 1 to 2 shift. Doesnt do it with a heavier throttle. Or, I can pause the throttle between the shifts, and it goes smoothly then, and then back on the gas. Some guys have said I need to install a Trans Go Shift kit and that will eliminate the issue. What is your experience with this 4T65E transmission? There seems to be a higher than normal fallout.

2007 chrysler town and country 321,980 miles. Ac ice cold heat will run you out. Runs strong. Trans gave out at 180,000. I replaced it with a 08 chrysler sebring convertable. Trans mounted in no issues. Were slight differences. Mainly the gear ratio! It now 5 mph fast and has higher gears(highway). Other than trans is all original. Soon struts, shocks, ineer&outter tie rods, lower control arms and sway links. Just did brakes 4 tires new battery and oil change. Considering replacing water pump and doing timing chain.

The 2008 Camry is notorious for burning oil due to owners listening to Toyota dealers and changing oil every 10,000 miles. There was a recall on the piston rings because of the oil change intervals. Mine burns about a quart every 1,000 miles. Bought from the second owner that way.

The 2009-2014 Camry with the 2.4L 4cyl engine has a problem with oil dilution, but it is okay if it had the piston ring recall work done, or if you change the oil every 6 months instead of 12. The 2011-2012 Camry has a problem with torque converter shudder at a narrow band of speeds which is an expensive fix if it happens to you, but other than that the Camry is rock solid.

I think I am going to disagree with everyone's take on the Nissan Altima. I have owned two and both have been excellent cars. I purchased the first one with around 9000 miles on it and drove it to almost 200,000 miles with really no issues. changed oil, gas and regular maintenance. When I went to trade it in is when I realized they had a reputation for bad transmissions. I never had an issue with the transmission and debated whether on getting another Altima or not. I narrowed the list down to a Camry, a Mazda or another Altima. In the end I liked the Altima so much, I bought a second one with about 13,000 miles on it. Different color, different trim level but pretty much the same drive train. I have now put close to 100,000 on it with no issues at all. Still looks like a brand new car inside and out. The car runs great. I am not hard on cars but I do have to drive them for my job. From my experience with the Nissan Altima I do reccommend it as a dependable car.
